MOE Amazing Race (11th March) Experience

This is my first time interacting with undergraduates. I was really excited for it as I will meet different kinds of people with different personality.

At first, I was quite nervous and it was a kind of tough to interact with them as I thought there might be some kind of age gap. But I tried to talk to them and I realize that they are such a fun bunch of ppl to be around with and I had a great time interacting with them!

I really had a lot of fun with them and they are such a great company. During the race, they motivated each other and also cared for each other. They also noted which group member who was missing from time to time and this is really heart-warming.

Halfway through the race, it rained heavily but they still wanted to continue with enthusiasm and excitement. Even though they do not know what they might discover at the next location. Throughout they still have fun with each other along the way.

I learnt that even though I may be interacting with different people whom I do not known for long, we are still able to build such good rapport between each other.

This race had really allowed me to have a whole new experience to interact with different people & I really learnt a lot. That we should always have team spirit in whatever we do. Just like the chopsticks story. One is easily breakable but when there is alot, its hard to break. No one is a lone ranger. I am really great to have such an opportunity to be part of this event which is so meaningful. Thanks Trybe (:

Old and new volunteers at Bukit View Sec School

DalstonWe had a super session in school on Monday. It was a normal “You Can Do It” programme, though it was held in the afternoon, after a whole day’s worth of school…. Anyways, I had a great time! The class was extremely energetic and participative.. Super! Everything we said, they did – all the activities, games and when any of the facilitators spoke, all of the students listened intently. It was just awesome!

It was good to see Dalston too. Here he is, sharing a part of the programme... If you know, Dalston has been a volunteer since 2002/2003, when we visited his secondary school – Dunman Secondary. He has always been a keen supporter of our programmes and an active volunteer with us. It was really nice to have our seasoned facilitators, like him, come to show the newer lead and co-lead facilitators how to handle certain aspects of the programme.

More importantly, it is good for me to know that our volunteers, and now our friends, are doing well in their own lives – progressing from secondary school, to post-secondary, to serving their national service liabilities, to furthering their studies or work! Each one a success story in the making! Strong!

After. Life Coaching

From left: Ainiah, Amy, Belinda (coach intern), Ronghui, Yati, me, Elizabeth

Call it occupational hazard or 'trying to be difficult', even during my catch up dinner with my first batch of life coachees last night, I could not help but ask them these leading questions:

* How do you think you have grown in the past year?
(Most of them entered a new stage of life into the Polys last year, one of them emerged through the O'levels, and another began working for the time being)

* What do you hope to work on in your personal life that will make this year better than the last?

The truth is, i wasn't trying to be difficult. I believe in the power of speaking out your growth journey and personal goals. It is always different when we hear our own selves articulate these, especially the affirmation of our growth.

So there i was trying to 'poke' into their lives though our official life coaching journey ended more than a year back. But it definitely paid off to be meddlesome in this case. My heart leapt with unspeakable joy as i heard each of them share from my questions above, especially when some of them expressed that they had overcome certain issues that were brought to light during the coaching journey!

I guess the best answer that i had gotten to my first question above was: moustache.

2 Programmes + 2 Awesome Schools in March 2008

Trybe brought two brand new programmes on 4th march & 8th march 2008.One was the Personal Effectiveness Workshop for Secondary 3 students of Bukit View Secondary School and the other was the Leadership Program for the class committee members of Tanjong Katong Secondary School.

Personal Effectiveness Workshop @ Bukit View Secondary School (March 04)
While traveling in Dy’s car we(The guys) were slightly lost around Jurong East area but luckily we had Steven Junior’s GPS Navigator phone to located our way to Bukit View Secondary School. The students were all taught how to cope with stress with their prior knowledge of their DISC profile as students with different DISC profile have different ways of coping with stress. “Strongman” challenge was also introduced in the program, a student from every class had to flex their muscles while carrying a dumbbell. After all the engaging activities in the classes the participants enjoyed a wonderful success story skit done up by some of our very own volunteers. Great job to everyone!!!

Leadership Program @ Tanjong Katong Secondary School (March 08)
After I entered the school gate, little did I expected to see many students coming to school early on a Saturday morning .Not only did I saw TRYBE volunteers but also the Tanjong Katong School Band with their nicely done up formation in their school’s field while playing sweet music with their instruments. As the program began, the students were a little puzzled on why they had been asked to go in to their classes in threes and at regular intervals. After half an hour the students all settled in to their classes with the males on stools while the ladies had to kneel on the floor and a special segment of the program named Albatross started. To me the Albatross segment was like a “ritual” as it was carried out in a language that we are not familiar of. The purpose was to explain that we can look at things from various points of view and to pass the message that different cultures does things in different way and that is not wrong.

Moving on after lunch was the game “HOW TALL IS ALFRED?” Students have to sit in a group of 6/7/8 without facing each other and they will try to solve the clues given to them by passing messages and decide how tall is Alfred? The game was so enjoyable that the students were asking to play again, this activity brought across the message that we must be specific when we say something to others as different people have different way of visualizing what we say. Many commented that it was a great way in teaching students about communication. At the end of the program not only did we had a rainbow skit, we also had a story on servant leadership for the students to reflect on themselves in the way the take up the role as class committee members. Cheers!!!!!
