DVD Review: Freedom Writers

Understanding the heart of each Trybe volunteer is a difficult task to describe, as we all are different in so many ways. but there is something that ties and binds us; it's that we want to make a genuine and sincere impact in the lives of the youth. Sometimes it's best just to show you what type of impact we want to make. If you want to know why we do what it is we do here at Trybe, then please watch Freedom Writers, and see things through the eyes of the lead actress, Hilary Swank. Without giving away the film, there is a courage she brings in helping her students overcome their own unique obstacles in life. Check it out.. you won't be disappointed.

Spiderman 3

Ok, this is my honest review! The movie was "Great" but totally needed more action. For most of the movie you'll find yourself going, "Huh? Why is he doing that if Spidy is so smart?" When watching this movie you'll be pondering the "Whys and Hows" of the events that take place. However, think light hearted and you'll enjoy the movie.

I honestly didn't fall asleep, I was surprised at the parts that demanded a surprise and I was thrilled at the parts that needed to be thrilled. However, this means that the movie is??? "Very predictable!", says Dolly. Oh by the way, if you want a good critic for a movie ask her, she's a pro at this. Reason: "She's both geek and nerd at the same time." (Chay and Shaun). Jokes aside, this movie is indeed redundant at many points of the movie; thus I'm harping on the fact that this movie is predictable. (Just kidding, ok enough said).

The good points of the movie are: 1) Action, action and action. 2) Graphics have improved. and 3) His "evil" / dark side! It's super cool to see a superhero go bad. It's like watching the quiet students in school become "Loud, wild and crazy!" it's like the most awesome thing to see. Man, when he becomes the "Dark Spidy" it's super funny.

Finally, this movie is great for all guys out there! The "Do's and Don'ts" to treating the one you're about to propose to. The ring in the glass doesn't work man...means she'll be fishing for treasure her whole life with you! (Just kidding). Ok ok the great lessons from the movie are: 1) As a man you're ready when you put your "love" "Wife" before you! 2) Forgiveness! 3) Listen and Listen even more. So yes, as you can see, I needed the lesson too. Sometimes as men we lack in these areas because circumstances run faster than our mind. Therefore, watch this movie and you'll get a S$9.00 lesson in life! Haha.

Ok, Kernit's out of here! Enjoy watching! Go spidy Go!

Visit to Thaicom Foundation

On this trip, I am reminded of how our world is so rich and diverse and how every culture contributes a unique hue to the palette of our lives; allowing us to see and understand our potential for greatness through a never before considered perspective.

While yesterday was meetings were really about infrastruture and the website and all, today I had the privilege of visiting the Thaicom Foundation office in Bangkok, Thailand.

What I really like about coming to Bangkok (apart from the great food, amazing hospitality and generally really nice people) is that people are so passionate about what they do. It is such a great feeling when I get that people here also really want to pass on that "You Can" spirit to the youth of their nation. Although we don't always understand what each other are saying, I feel like they are already old friends or family.

I can't wait to see what this team is going to accomplish in the months ahead. :)

Two Day Train-the-Trainers for Lead Volunteers at Trybe Thaicom!

Trybe Thailand has done it again! In the past 2 days (26th-27th May), we have equipped over 80 enthusiastic Thai volunteers with the spirit and skills they need to bring our flagship program “You can do it!” to schools across Thailand. 2 days of meaningful personal experience, fun-filled learning activities and not to mention the gathering of like-minded individuals in the training ground.

The 80 new volunteers in Thailand represent different professions; university students, lecturers, real estate consultants, executives in telecommunications and caring mothers. One of the volunteers, Ao, whom we first met when the program was introduced in Chiangmai January 2007 came to attend this TTT in Bangkok because of the felt impact on his own life!

In a short 9 months, with the generous help of a pool of committed volunteers, Trybe Thaicom has served over 3,000 students in 9 schools, 310 teachers, 240 parents. And We will continue to do our very best for the nation of Thailand.

View the following, captured moments of the 2-day Train-the-Trainers!

Dare today at Jurongville

“I had a great time at Jurongville Secondary School today. Today’s programme which is Dare to Dream has been recently updated. There are more activities now to each type of Intelligence. Eventhough I have a short time with 2N1 students to me that was very precious. Even though I didn’t have much chance to speak in the class but I believe that every students in 2N1 can achieve their destiny and full potentials. Thank you 2N1 for having me in your class!

Another group of people that I would like to mention are the volunteers that turn up for today’s session. To Ben, Bing Rong, Ryan Ham, Henzy, Sam and Yussif, I would like to give you a big thank you for getting up early and come to today's session which everyone have to be there at 7am. What moved me most even in the midst of getting things ready is that these volunteers didn’t give up to come to the session in such early morning. I really want to salute and appreciate you for coming and definitely make a huge different in the students’ lives and mine. Thank you.”

The classic phrase “YOU ARE THE BEST!”

Having left NUS and gone on to a new phase of working life, I reminisce over the periods of fun times imprinted during my NUS days. And the fond memories of always hanging out at Thumbs-Up (Now Trybe) sessions and meetings under the NUS-Community Service Club etc is a chapter that leaves me hard to pen the closing paragraph because a new chapter always springs up when you least expects it.

My first day as a volunteer with Trybe has left a deep impression that I find hard to erase. From stepping into Yuan Ching Sec in my blue collar tee-shirt that struck a BIG contrast to those in orange to the hyped-up ramblings in the hall and finally the heartfelt moments in the class with Nicholas Lee and Adrian Chan, I saw the beauty and intriguing truth of believing unwoven before my sight. Far from the students impacted with the word spoken, lives touched by the understanding of themselves, I found that I was the greatest beneficiary of all because I share in the same knowledge and understanding that liberated me in my values and self esteem.

From that moment, life took a drastic turn of its own, one that I sometimes found hard to comprehend on recall and even think that I could master; a lifestyle of regular volunteering and participation in the sessions, camps and eventually the life coaching program. Each step I took in venturing through each of these activities, it builds up on my character, my drive and my passion, desiring to serve and really make a difference in the lives of young people today. Yet it was not by my mere efforts alone but what the team at Trybe did that fostered the strength and enthusiasm to carry on.

Today even as I step out into the working world, I still remembered the classic statements “YOU CAN DO IT!”, “YOU ARE THE BEST!”, ringing out in my head whenever I see someone who is down or out. This is my encouragements to them, just as in the same way it has encouraged me through the many years of volunteering with Trybe.

Till date, I believe that Trybe has probably touched more lives then it has before and that number will only continue to grow but I just want to say that the one life you have touched and who has live to speak of it has now returned to “haunt” you with more testimonies and entries because Trybe really deserves it. And to melt the tip of that iceberg, this is the beginning and more will come as we remember the times of testing in life coaching and even camps.

But from the bottom of my heart, thanks for allowing me opportunities to grow, nurture myself and even be principle guidance to my soul, and helping me to explore my talents with yours.

YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!! (really)

If I Run, I Cannot Hide (Mother's Day 2007)

To all the great and mighty Mother's out there, "You are a mighty blessing beyond all doubt!" This is my honor to all of you wonderful Mama's out there.

Love,
Kern (Trybe Volunteer)

If I Run, I Cannot Hide
By: Kern Lee (13-05-07 Mother’s Day)

If I run, I cannot hide.
If I lie, I have a guilty smile.
“If I…If I…Mama’s right.”
I honor her now for awhile!

She knows when I’m naughty,
She sees my big guilty grin,
Eye’s behind her head so aptly,
“Put it down, you know it’s sin!”

My wow to all Mama’s out there,
Who’ve seen the good, bad and ugly,
Each child you treat so fair and square,
Bless you for living with all the smelly!

To my mama, I love you so true,
When I’m down you pick me up,
Times I try and try to face the blue,
You’re my wisdom beyond a doubt!

Millionaire Mind Set

[View this post]

I saw this very interesting post about "Success" from "Daniel Millions blog" which I post some of the lines here which are very interesting to read. Please feel free to go to his blog and read the whole article about Millionaire Mind Set.

Most of us have an idea about what success means to us, and we have a mental vision of what it will look like when it arrives in our lives. We might finally get the career recognition we’ve been working so hard for, earn a lot of money, find the man or woman of our dreams, start a family, purchase our own home, buy the sports car we’ve wanted since we were a teenager, or reach any number of other personal accomplishments.

Is this success? For some of us, it might be. Perhaps you have a different vision of what success means to you.

Regardless of your personal definition of success, you likely have one thing in common with the rest of us: you are still seeking the level of success you want to attain. Maybe you’ve had success in certain areas, but not in others. Your career might be going great, but your relationships are lacking.

In this modern age, we have the misguided notion that success is some elusive quality “out there” that we need to hunt down and capture. We believe that if we say the right things, do the right things, take exactly the right steps, success will fly right into our little butterfly net and we can pin it down on a sheet of cardboard and hang it proudly on our wall.

We can’t capture success, nor can we buy it, stumble across it, or fall into it. We can only create it, from the inside out. And the only way to create it is by changing our thoughts and habits. What do thoughts have to do with anything? Everything! What we expect to see, we see. What we expect to have in our lives, we have. What we focus on the most, expands.

If your life isn’t what you want it to be, your thoughts have not been in alignment with it. This can be a tricky concept to understand, but the most important point to get is that it’s a cumulative process.

Think of a scale. If you place a grain of sand in one of the trays, it probably won’t make much difference to the balance of the scale. But if you add another grain, and another, and another, before long the scale will begin to tilt in that direction. Your thoughts work in much the same way, and if you have enough of one particular type of thought, it will affect your quality of life.

This may sound bad, but it’s actually a good thing! If we can create imbalance and lack with our thoughts and habits, we can also create abundance and success. It’s all within our control.

What if I told you that just by changing your mind-set, you could begin to effortlessly attract the success you desire? What if you could not only attract success, but become successful at a core level?

You can! If you only learn how to transform your thinking processes and develop a true success mind-set. And with the right mind-set, there is no limit to what you can create in your life.

The important thing to remember as you embark upon this journey is that it’s a process. Take your time and enjoy it. Don’t expect perfection – simply relax and have fun with the techniques!

Trust me, they will work much better if you have fun with them, rather than getting mired in frustration or placing unrealistic expectations on yourself. Remember that a large part of success is the contentment you feel in each moment. Allow yourself to feel it now, even if everything in your life isn’t the way you wish it were. Soon enough, it will be.

This is what Mahatma Gandhi says “My imperfections and failures are as much a blessing from God as my successes and my talents and I lay them both at his feet.”
