Trybe is 6 years old! Happy Birthday!

Trybe is officially 6 years old this week! Thumbs Up! was officially launched on the 27th July 2001 in Siglap Secondary School. Time has really flown by and we are now entering our 7th year.

To celebrate, the gang trooped off to Jaime's mom's famous Prawn Noodle shop in Bedok North to feast on Laksa, Lor Mee and of course Prawn Noodle.

Run the Race with Perseverance

Last December as a personal challenge i took part in the Standard Chartered Half-Marathon (21km) - my very first! To a person who dislikes running and did not enjoy my 2.4km runs in school, i felt almost like i paid $30++ for registration, just to push myself into a pit . But hey, the more i was not comfortable in doing it, the more i wanted to take up the challenge to push myself beyond my limits.

These were my take-aways from the race:

^Pain in the joints between the legs and the torso
^Bruised toenails (Ouch! They dropped off after that!)
^Bad headache
^Over-exerted strain on the stomach (i forgot to eat breakfast! gosh)

Now you must be thinking "Mirabel you siaoz ah!".

But i had NO REGRETS! I AM A WINNER! I conquered myself!

Yes the temporary conditions above tried to discourage me from finishing the race. I felt like my body was breaking into two pieces. But in mental strength, i saw my finishing line right from the start, and crossed it in the end!

And guess what, i was healed from these right after the race. My toe nails are nice now. Ha.

Do not be mistaken that i was one of the top runners to finish the 21km. I didn't care how fast the others ran. I was running my own race, and the most important thing was that i finished it.

I want to use this little experience to epitomise my whole life - to finish the race of life well and strong, even with bloody knees after falling!

How are you running your race (of life) today?

Are you too busy comparing your speed with others that you don't push yourself the maximum?

Do you keep looking backwards, wondering how you had done in the past? Remember you cannot change the past, but you CAN determine how your future will be.

Have the end in mind, run the race with perseverance, look AHEAD and stay focused!

April Coughlin, of New Paltz, celebrates as she crosses the finish line at the 2001 Utica Boilermaker Road Race, Sunday, July 8, 2001. She was the second female to finish in the wheelchair race.

Rick and Dick: Team Hoyt

After I broke my arm last year, I've been inspired to compete in triathlons and there are few tougher competitions than the Ironman. The Ironman competition involves 3 components: a 3.86km swim, 180.2km ride ending with a 42.195km run.

It is in the context of this grueling race that many amazing stories of the strength of the human spirit are told.

Here is one of my favorite videos of all time. A father and son team called Team Hoyt. Made me cry the first time I saw it. Makes me cry almost every time still. Enjoy. :)

"Our message is 'Yes, You can!'. You can do anything that you want to do. As long as you make up your mind, you can do it." - Dick Hoyt

Club Ilya "You Can Do It!"

Trybe partnered the Health Promotion Board for a “You Can Do It!” session for a group of youths and volunteers from Club Ilya last Saturday. The session focused on heightening the self-awareness of the youth and encouraging them to overcome their previous offences to excel in their life. During that session, we heard an inspirational personal testimony by one of our friends. Thank you guys for giving us your time and attention that afternoon. We have been truly touched by your lives and energy. We hope that our programme has benefited you to know that you are all unique individuals with great potential! We believe in each of you!

Project FriendMarked was started by a young guy named Galvin back in 2001, He was inspired by "Pass It On" cards that he received from a friend. With his design skills he started to create bookmarks with pictures of people to encourage others. that's how his simple hobby became a large-scale project involving people from all walks of life.

MILK Run

MILK(Mainly I Love Kids) Run is an annual fund-raiser and a youth day celebration which was held last Sunday, July 1 at Jiak Kim Street. The route takes runners along the Singapore River. It draws a 10,000 strong crowd from schools, youth organizations, corporates and other community partners. The MILK Run comprises a competitive quarter marathon, a community run, a concert and a post-race carnival which some of us participated in the VWO category. Everyone finished the race but I'm really proud of the 3 girls that joined us who all got in top 5 finishers.

Trybe Bursary

L-R: Nic, Chris, Jessica, Dy, Rachel, Joel

L-R: Joel, Nic, Nurul, Lang, Jasmine, Rachel, Jaime

Last Thursday (28 June 07) was a special day for us. It was the first time that Trybe gave out Bursaries to students. We had the privilege to hand out two bursary packages to Nurul and Jessica at the Trybe Centre.

Nurul is a secondary 1 student at Tampines Secondary School. She has transited well from Primary to Secondary School. Jessica is a student at the ITE, studying Multimedia Technology, attaining a very impressive GPA of 4.0! The two girls were happy to receive the bursary from Trybe.

From some time back, the Bursary had been something that I wanted to do personally. I am a strong advocate of education and I really don’t like to hear about young people not being able to go to school because of any financial difficulty that they face. I believe that everyone has a right to education and they should be given a shot at some form of education in their life time.

Trybe has been fortunate to have the partnership of the Wapuka Foundation from the United States for this Bursary. We are working to hand out one more Bursary to another well deserving student soon.
