Hua Yi Leadership Camp 2008

The camp’s objective was “everybody wins,” making sure that everyone is built up in their leadership. It was a wonderful camp whose objective was met and all the projects successfully implemented!! I was so amazed by how fast the students pick up the message and demonstrate it.
Let me mention some of the key features for leadership that I observed during the camp!
LEADERS MOTIVATE: During the activities, I heard students encouraging each other saying “Good Job” “You can do it!” ”Go, go, go!” “Wooooo” and taking initiative to cheer for others who have done a good job. I picked up a Chinese word which is “Jia you” as it was mentioned so many times in the camp! I also heard students encouraging each other by saying “I like how you did ~” “You are so good at ~” I really felt the energy and empowerment!
LEADERS SUPPORT: I saw students asking each other “Is there anything I can help?” Or even without saying anything some students just took the job and helped other teams once they were done with their own team’s work. Some where happy to get their hands dirty. Some where very persistent to support and not giving up the job half way through. Some students volunteered to help the aunty to plant the seeds which was even out of the scope of the camp. Everyone’s support was an important element for the whole group to win as a team!
LEADERS RESPECT: I saw some respect from leaders trying to include everyone in the discussion by asking “Why don’t you join in?” “What do you think?” This shows a sense of respect that we care about what you think and your opinion is important to the group. I also saw respect from staffs and volunteers toward the students as they trusted the students are capable of managing the project and left it up to the students not poking into what students are doing or giving too many instructions but being there when support is required.
My favorite quote. “If your actions inspire others to dream more, do more, and become more, you are a leader. John Quiency Adams.” Wow, I saw this happening so many times in this camp. Well-organized and well-designed camp to bring out the potentials of the student leaders with great role models for leaders all over the place. I learn so much. Thank you, students, volunteers and staffs for the great time!!

Some feedback from the participants:
"I enjoyed "Matrix" game the most as this involves team cooperation. Our facilitators are very enthusiastic which influenced me to join in the fun. This is the first time we had to plan the other half of the camp ourselves in just a few hours! This is really challenging as it normally takes at least a week to plan a part of the camp and rehease it out. Overall, I've learnt to plan things in a quicker pace, and I love the camp!"

"though the camp was tiring it was real fun. I learnt very much from the camp. The facilitators were really good. They were really helpful and kind. I feel that Trybe should be organizing more of such events."
