The following reflections were written by Su Fern, one of the prefects at Chua Chu Kang Secondary (CCKS) Leadership Development Camp held at Trybe Centre on 28-30 November 2008, on her blog. Thank you Su Fern for agreeing to share this with us on Trybe blog! :) We are so proud of you!Reflection- Something learnt at Trybe campAs an individual, I've occasionally felt the need to prove my ability to others. I would sometimes compare myself to another person without realizing it and start thinking about how inferior I appeared to be , and how I lack in certain areas.
During this camp, I have come to an understanding that my previous mindset was very wrong. I should have seen the person as an example, someone whom I can seek to model after, instead of as a gauge of my abilities.
Something I've learnt over the years is that one does not become a leader overnight.
Everyone is different, therefore we show our leadership potential in different ways. Some are more outspoken, thus they stand out of the crowd. Others are more reserved but that does not mean that they cannot lead as well as outspoken ones. Some show their potential early, others may be late bloomers and need a bit more shaping and guiding.
Think about books.
When they first start off,we are at our most pristine stage- a blank manuscript. There is nothing but pages and pages left to fill up with knowledge. An author, not unlike someone who guides and moulds us, puts in hard work to form up a plot, an outline of the story they want to share with others, just like a vision a leader wishes to tell others.
As time goes by, we are constantly being filled and edited. We are learning from our mistakes, improving and always getting better.
One day, when our story is completed and ready to be shared with others, we are put into bookstores. Some of us are instant bestsellers, while others may lie hidden, patiently waiting for their story to be read and passed among others.
The stories leave an impression on others, just like the legacy a leader eaves behind. Some stories are adapted and improved upon, similar to how we all learn from one another.
We all have our own story, each one different from the others. And yet, it does not mean some are better then the others. We cannot be compared because we are unique. No two of us share the same story.
I still have much to learn from the people around me. There is no point in comparing, instead we need to learn from each others' strong points, improve on our weak points and be forward looking.
A leader must believe in his or herself, for how can you instill others to follow your footsteps if you yourself is unsure? Therefore, I understood that it's not how much better someone else is, but how much you put in. I'm sure if you put in your very best and you are sincere about it, others would definitely sense your effort.
It is never too late to discover and learn from your mistakes. Hence, I will seek to improve and put in my all in everything that I do.
