A note from Mr Thankful
This post may be quite overdue, but the Trybe team feels that Dalston had brought up very good learning points for all of us to hear. We are also proud of Dalston for being teachable and courageous, to learn and to try at every step.
Some of you may know that Dalston also recently received the "Mr Thankful" special award at Trybe Volunteer Appreciation 2009! His sharing below amplifies that grateful heart of Dalston, which is a rare and good trait that we want to affirm in him.
Dalston on leading the Trybe Sports Day' 09 project last year...
Just for the records, Trybe-ie! *volunteers from Trybe*, this is the very first time after 7 years of volunteering with Trybe that I am actually organising an event! I got Manfred to vice-IC with me, Joel (Games Master), and Dion (overall dance instructor) to be in the committee for Trybe's Sports Day 09! Kudos to them! They have been a very good team. Taking charge of this event has been a joy since all of my committee members were able to help in areas that I personally am weak at. From weekly meetings to the planning of logistics, booking of venue to sourcing for equipment and food, every single one in the committee had been very resourceful and helpful. A big applause for them!
When Mirabel first asked me about my willingness to take this project on, I was overjoyed. I had always wanted to be able to do something in return for Trybe after all the help I have received from Trybe. We were honoured to get really good dancers from Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), who are Dion's personal friends, to come to teach dance to the volunteers. Not only did they pour their hearts out in teaching, they gave their best in performing too! Actually for those who had missed the chance of joining this year's Trybe's Sports Day 09, I just want you to know, you have just missed the chance of seeing Trybe's Executive Director Nicholas Lee's dance move!
Although it rained that day and the floorball mania was not able to take place, seeing the faces of all the participants as they enjoyed the dance class made our hard work in planning and doing up the event really worthwhile. =)
I would say, the opportunity to lead such an event has truly been an honour. Not only did I learn how to lead a team, I also learnt that the key to success in any planning is to always ask and listen to advices, be humble to learn and to dare to overcome mistakes and move on.
Thank you Trybe!
