You Do Make The Difference

"I saw this in one of the classroom during a Trybe programme..."

You Do Make The Difference
-Unknown-

If each grain of sand were to say:
One grain does not make a mountain,
There would be no land.

If each drop of water were to say:
One drop does not make an ocean,
There would be no sea.

If each note of music were to say:
Each note does not make a symphony,
There would be no melody.

If each word were to say:
One word does not make a library,
there would be no book.

If each brick were to say:
One brick does not make a wall,
There would be no house.

If each seed were to say:
One seed does not make a field,
There would be no harvest.

If each of us were to say:
One person does not make the difference,
there would never be love and peace on earth.

YOU DO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE,
BEGIN TODAY AND MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.

Jordan's 'What is Love' Commercial

Michael Jordan tried out for the varsity basketball team during his sophomore year, but at 5 feet 11 inches (1.80 m), he was deemed too short to play at that level. The following summer, however, he grew four inches (10 cm) and trained rigorously. Upon earning a spot on the varsity roster, Jordan averaged 25 points per game over his final two seasons of high school play. As a senior, he was selected to the McDonald's All-American Team after averaging a triple-double: 29.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 10.1 assists. The rest, is history. Now tell me... what do YOU love?

Classic Moment: William Hung

I don't care who you are, you gotta love his courage and attitude in this classic clip. Sure it's hilarious, and maybe you think what he did was stupid. For me, I'm all for people who break out of their comfort zone and do what they believe in, whether they fail or not.

Quick Review: The Heart of the Game

Beware: Spoiler ahead if you read on...
I won't spoil the entire film, although I'm tempted to. The synopsis is simple: It's a story that captures the passion and energy of a Seattle high school girls' basketball team, the eccentricity of their unorthodox coach, and the incredible true story of one player's fight to play the game she loves. This is a documentary, shot in a 5 year span and released last year in select theatres, reminiscent of Hoop Dreams nostalgia. What I loved about this movie wasn't just the dramatic basketball footage; it was the drive of Darnellia, one of the main characters, and how she rose from her mistakes, how she matured and fought hard to make her dreams happen. In life, you find too many people who drop their dreams or aspirations when faced with true adversity. In fact, Darnellia's personality suggests she falls into this same category... but she doesn't. You absolutely connect with her, feel upset when she makes mistakes, but your heart jumps and you unknowingly praise her for her perseverance. The other thing I liked about the film was the constant encouragement the coach gave. He was direct with his players but always took the game of basketball and tried to apply it as a tool to better the players' lives. The movie's gripping, intense, and makes you wanna smile the whole way through, except for those moments where you feel something bad's gonna happen. You wanna see a success story unfold? Watch The Heart of the Game. You don't have to be basketball or sports fan to enjoy this feel-good flick.

When Nicholas is on leave, everything just gets weirder

About how weird things get around here? We have a wonderful office policy: If we want to take leave, we have to get another person to "Cover" for us. Like, take over our duties for the time that we are away.

The problem is that when Nicholas (our GM) is on leave, who's going to cover him right? He's the big papaya, the king Kahuna. Who's going to stand in for him huh?

I have just 2 words for you. Wally the Wombat. Wally does almost everything that Nic does except move, eat, talk, send emails, sign cheques and make executive decisions and a number of other things.

He does however, also have the habit of checking himself out in the mirror like our glorious leader. Discretely of course. Managed to get a shot as Wally was checking himself out though... Nic would have been proud. I think it's the chair...

Sometimes working in Trybe is just plain weird

Like I said, sometimes it's just plain weird. Here's what Jia Huey did yesterday in her free time. She's getting married soon and really needed some ideas on what the gown for the wedding dinner would look like so...

I mean, there are ways to make a wedding memorable and then THERE ARE WAYS TO MAKE A WEDDING MEMORABLE. you know what I mean? :)

The Pursuit

I watched "The Pursuit of Happyness" over 3 weeks ago, walking into the theatre anticipating inspiration and witnessing a man trying to overcome great obstacles. To my surprise, I really didn't enjoy sitting through it. The lead character, Will Smith, had to go through so many trials and negative experiences; in fact, the movie felt like they were not made to be successful. Without giving away the ending, it just wasn't a 'feel good' movie... only until the very end. Recently I decided to think about why I didn't enjoy the movie, and it suddenly dawned on me: the very title is "The PURSUIT of Happyness". This movie ISN'T about happiness; it's about one's JOURNEY to achieve happiness. In life, I realize, we're all sometimes like me, a mere spectator, who gets disappointed on a negative life journey. I might have a bad day, break a leg, lose my job, I lose a best friend, accidents may happen, etc. These things can dwindle my spirit and keep me from fighting onward. But the beauty of the movie showcases the perserverence, dedication and resilience Will Smith's character shines to show, from the beginning, til the very end, where he finally achieves something very special. Do you have these qualities? For me, I believe this 'pursuit' is one of the greatest races we all have to run in life. So if you ask me today if I enjoyed the movie, I'll emphatically say 'Yes'. ... ... ... But I still wish the kid got his toy back. I know I know... just go see the movie.

When the going gets tough....

[View this post]

Like it or not, life is always full of PROBLEMS and at times they just seem never ending. Financial PROBLEMS, family PROBLEMS, relationship PROBLEMS, studies PROBLEMS, friendship PROBLEMS, personal PROBLEMS. Anything that we can think of, there is a possibility of PROBLEMS taking place! The hard truth of life is that many times we cannot escape PROBLEMS! But the key question we must learn to ask ourselves is, "So what are we going to do about it?"

The bottomline is we can either choose to wallow in defeat and eat worms, or we can choose to stand up and learn from the experience.

The learning and growth journey in character only begins when we choose to stand up and move on. Wallowing in defeat and eating worms on leads to more sorrows. So what's your choice?

You are Special

A friend of mine closed his training by holding up a 2$ bill that he carefully draw from his wallet. In the room of 30 rowdy normal-tech students, he asked, "Who would like this $2 dollar?" Hands started raising up. He said, "I am gonna give this $2 dollar bill to one of you in this room but first, let me do this..."
He crumpled the dollar bill. He then asked, "Who still wants it?"
Still hands were up in the air and kids starting to get really excited to grab it from his hands. Well, he replied, "What if I do this?" He dropped it on the ground an started to grind it in the floor with his shoes. He picked it up, now as crumpled as ever and even dirty. "Now who still wants it?"
Still hands went into the air.

"Guys, you all learned a simple yet a very valuable lesson here. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It is still valuable and it is still worth $2 dollar." Many times in our live, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way.

We may feel as though we are worthless, But no matter what has happened or what will happen to you, you will never lose your value: dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who love you. The worth of our lives come not in what we do or who we know but by WHO WE ARE.

YOU ARE SPECIAL - DON'T EVER FORGET THAT.

Do you have a dream?

[View this post]
When the passion of a dream becomes compelling enough, it seems we tend to become just so much more willing to almost absentmindedly place ourselves in perilous positions just to see if something might happen. Think pubescent teenager waiting under the void deck for hours just to catch a glimpse of that girl from the other class that he’s so in serious like with.

If you have a dream, pursue it. Do it for the experience, the bragging rights and stories to share. Do it because you can never can tell (as some of my Filipina friends say it). But if you don’t do it for yourself, do it for all the people that need to see someone doing it because they are just too scared to do it alone.

“Some people live for the fortune. Some people live just for the fame. Some people live for the power, yeah. Some people live just to play the game. Some people think that the physical things define what's within and I've been there before, that life's a bore. So full of the superficial” - Alicia Keys

Have you ever made a mistake so bad you cant believe YOU made it?
Like it's SO out of character. YOUR character.
Well recently, that happened to me.
You see, I have always taken pride in the fact that I am a person with alot of common sense.

So what did i take away from this incident?
(1) To show grace.
(2) To not judge a person quickly. (even if we are talking about work, and what is "common sense") So much for sizing up people - interviews are farces - they should be called oral exams. Ha ha ha..
(3) Give people time to develop. What is common sense to me is because I had the chance to see it before, in some way or other - others may not have. Give them time to see it.

March Volunteer Camp 2007

This was our very first Volunteer Camp, an overnight event that was held at Trybe Centre. Trybe invited selected volunteers and all the staff, where we had a great time of bonding. We had our mini barbeque party, group games and followed by an exciting movie show of 'Nacho Libre'. Everyone participated in the fun activities the following day. And we learned key training tips from our very own master trainers Praise & Jaime.

I hope those guys who participated had a great time as much as we did(Staff).
You guys are the best!
