East Spring Sec (YLMP) Service Learning Camp

We’ve just finished a 3-Day 2-Night YLMP (Youth Leaders and Mentors Programme) camp for East Spring Secondary School students. We kicked off the Tribal themed camp by getting everyone’s faces radically painted. Students showed-off and screamed their cheers as the atmosphere built with intensity and excitement, Trybe style! For the next 2 days, we had great fun running the teens through interactive activities related to community project management and service learning. The camp ended on a very high note, as the students did special presentations of all the things they’ve learned to their teachers.

Volunteer Training on 22nd Nov 06

Hey guys and gals! Thanks for taking time to come for the volunteer training! I had a great time and hope you did too. It really encouraged and touched me to see that each of you has received and taken away something for your own life and a passion to make a difference.

For memories sake here is the photo of this graduating class! Enjoy!

Keep planting and seeding,
Jia Huey

Trybe Thailand Video

Here's the Trybe Thailand Video that Shaun mentioned in his report of the Launch event on the 7th October.

Made by none other than our Eric Tee, it features footage from the You Can Do It! programmes at Mater Dei Institute, Assumption College and the Voluteer training programmes held in August 2006. Enjoy!

Emphasis working on Trybe anthem

Neli, aka Emphasis, is currently producing the Trybe anthem. You can check out the work in progress ("TryBe of the Headno..." track) at his MySpace page. Emphasis just relocated to Singapore (from NZ) and believe me, this guy is gonna set it off Auckland style in the Lion City. The boy is filthy talented. Stay tuned to the final production of this piece and upcoming jams by Emphasis.

Launch of Trybe Name @ Shangrila Hotel on 7th October 2006

We officially changed our name from Thumbs Up! to Trybe on 7th October 2006 at the Shangri-la Hotel. Having a small yet memorable event was touching. Minister Mah Bow Tan was our guest of honour, which really meant so much to us as he has always been a strong supporter of Trybe.

The whole programme that night was marked by five main points, Thumbs Up! milestone, Trybe name and new mission, Trybe Thailand, Trybe podcast and publications.

Remembering the past and what we have accomplished so far since July 2001 was really powerful to me personally because it revealed what we were able to achieve in just five years.

The climax of the whole event to me, was really marked by Eric V sharing the new name, logo, and mission of Trybe. The reason why this was so moving to me and makes my hair stand every time I think about this, is because, with a new look it indicates where Trybe is headed…a direction which will only grow bigger, better, stronger to one day becoming a name that will impact the world.

In August 2006, Trybe Thailand was officially started. With a short video of Thailand it revealed to the board members and our guest of honours at the dinner what we are able to do in Singapore is also just as powerful in Bangkok. Which really proves to the world that our programme works!!! No matter in Singapore or another country all I can say is, Bring it on!!!!

Trybe Podcast and Publications: Many new projects are currently at work to not only make Trybe better but to be able to capture the youth in any country. The new podcast which will be hosted by Eric V and Joel Mok will open many doors touching on subjects like dating, pornography, family, hatred, etc. Listen to them man…trust me they are going to be great … hee hee hee

Trybe Publications also is another project that will be used as a tool to impart knowledge on how parents and teachers can relate to the youth. As the next generation continues to change with new technology, new fades, and new movements, this book will help to understand the youth of the next generations better. I wrote a chapter in the book so if anyone wants my autograph look for me. Hee hee hee...

The stress ball fight that started it all (part 1)...

Here's a video for the guys that came for the Stress Ball Tourney at the Trybe Centre last week. If you ever wondered what sort of weird inspiration was behind the organising of something as off da wall as a "STRESS BALL TOURNEY"??? Wonder no more!!!

In April this year, we happened to be in possession of a few hundred stress balls (which we eventually gave away in programmes). A few looks and snide remarks later, egged on by some good 'ol American trash talking from Eric.... Well, the rest is history. Thanks to Joadine for capturing the action on her phone. :)

Eric does get severely whacked for his part in this, but that's a different vid...

Trybe Tribute Video

Here is a tribute video created by the wonderful Eric Tee (he's not married) that was shown on the day of the launch of the new Trybe name. Sorry, took a while to figure out how to shrink this for posting but I finally got it!

All thanks for Mrs Pamelia Lee, Mrs Kay Goon and Rachel who were really instrumental in bringing Thumbs Up! (now Trybe) into the world over 5 years ago. You DA MOMMAS!!!

Gosh. This vid gave me so many flashbacks as I watched it, remembering all the times and people that have been a part of us through the years. sniff.. sniff.. :)

Working Day...

Today was working day at the office.. Raffy, I and Jas worked on the organising the information for Trybe Thailand but Jas had to run around abit so it was good time of reorganizing the information we had, updating it and also Raffy building the new Volunteer DB. Hmm.. I really like developing, refining systems and structure! ;p I m a systems geek!

Something I discovered myself, I can’t shop 3 hours straight! Couldn't keep up with the rest of the people at Suan Lum after the day's work. I find it amazing that pp have the stamina to shop 3 hours straight! I left for massage.. also, I realized I have a super stiff back because each time the masseuse does my back.. I am in pain!! Ouch! What have I done to my back?

InterKids Bilingual School n my Bday!!

We went to Interkids Bilingual School.. or shall I say Trilingual because the students in this school actually speak English, Chinese and Thai. Woke up bright and early this morning at 630am to head down to the school.. we had to factor in Bangkok Traffic afterall ;p

We conducted the You Can Do It! Program for 101 students as well as the teachers and parents of this school. The students were extremely well behaved and responsive in class. Though the students were bilingual, it's amazing how they all perked up when my Thai co-lead, Khun Edd (pronounced ‘eed’) spoke to them - the power of language and connection! Khun Edd is so sweet! Really glad to have co-led with her today, and not only that, i got to meet her son who was studying in that school too! :)

O yes! it was also my birthday today! hehe. So to celebrate, I went out for dinner at a nice Thai restaurant called Mango Tree with some of the volunteers.. absolutely YUMMY! In fact, later on that nite, we all gathered in Rachel's room for a showdown between the guys and girls via... CHARADES!

the GUYS won.. because they CHEATED. They made up movie names?? "Fluid Motion of the Prima Ballerina??.. Flava Flava and Public Enemy Number One?? The Day I Killed My Wife??"But the girls had a good go at the guys because watching them was HILARIOUS! hehehe

"My highlights: Seeing that our Thai ambassadors and Singapore volunteers working together for a common cause. Some classes look like they have been doing it for some time together" – Marc Mok

"My co-leads Nut and Raat really did a good job facilitating the program in the Thai language. The kids are very comfortable with them and can relate to them really well." – Rafael Panes

"My highlights: To see that Tu can connect with the students so well. It’s really magic! Tu rocks! She just made today’s run for me and Keith possible!" - Tay Kaiyun

Focus Groups and Managing Stuff..

We had 2 focus groups today: one for Parents and Teachers and the other one on Youths! In the 2 sessions, Praise, Jia Huey and Jaime took time to gather views from volunteers on their worldviews and to spend time to find out more about their childhood and how different parenting styles have affected their outlook in life.

No, this wasn't a counseling session or a psychotherapeutic exercise... but this allowed our volunteers to understand themselves better and so to gather more insights to facilitate Trybe for Parents and Teachers more effectively.

Can't really comment much coz i wasn't there for the focus groups though i heard great stuff about it. Joel, Raffy and I were crunching bytes on our laptops to develop our Volunteer DB and Info Management systems for Trybe Thailand! We had fun as we typed away... waiting for our ice blended drinks.. for ONE hour! *no kidding*

The whole workshop for Parents and Teachers programme was my highlight! I was given time to recall, reflect and analyze on things and incidents that happened in my younger days which never occurred to me why things happened the way they did. My perspective was renewed. I felt very much enlightened and comforted and I felt I can contribute for the Trybe Parents session tomorrow. – Christina Victor
